I’m not great at social media. I don’t tweet nearly as often as I should, my Facebook Page hasn’t been updated in ages and I can’t remember the last time I looked at Google Plus. So I certainly couldn’t be described as a social media junkie.

But despite my lack of updates, I do have a look at other people’s messages fairly often - if several times a week can be thought of as ‘fairly often’ that is. One thing I’ve noticed is that quite a lot of local businesses seem to be missing the point entirely...

A while back I wrote about promoting a local business using Google Places and it is still an essential part of marketing a business on the web.

Places has been updated somewhat and is now called Google My Business and there is now also a dedicated app available (search for Google My Business). The basic idea remains the same; a listing will get your business seen in Google Search, Maps and Google Plus and it is still the most cost effective way to advertise your business on Google - you don’t get any more ‘cost effective’ than free, so get your info out there!
